It was highly prized for medicinal purposes by the Knights of St John, rulers of the islands for around 250 years from 1530. Deemed so valuable, the rock was permanently guarded by the knights, and the death penalty awaited anybody caught attempting to steal the fungus. Known to locals as Il-Gebla tal- General, the waters outside average 40 meters deep, and are home to grouper, many larger fish as well as the ubiquitous sea urchins, bristle worms, star fish and even manta rays. Inside the bay, the average depth is eight metres, and offers fantastic snorkelling opportunities.
