Getting around in Malta, one of the smallest islands for sun seeking tourists n the Med can be fun.

Travelling around is pretty easy and there are many ways to see the island in all its glory.

Arriving at Malta International Airport? from here you can hire a car, grab a speedy shuttle, a taxi, bolt, uber, a pre-booked airport transfer bus or the public bus.

So I am going to give you an overview of your options.

Car Hire

Hiring a car is a good idea if you like to be independent, if you are confident and brave to et behind the wheel . There are many car hire desks at the airport such a Hertz, Europecar etc. The country roads are idyllic and much like driving on single track roads in the UK. However, the cities and more built up areas are rather manic and be prepared to use your car horn, it is used in abundance, with many leaning on it to warn others of their mere presence on the roads. It is all good fun though adding to you expeirnce in Malta.

Facts: Most of the road signs are in English and people drive on the left. Malta has potholes so be aware.

Buses

The Dolmans, or Push me, pull me buses are a great way to get around Malta. Buses are very frequent and reliable and will travel to all corners of the island. It’s a good idea to download a route map before you go, to familiarise yourself with the routes. Buses are a little more crowded than in the UK, and there are lots of potholes on the road so it can be quite a bumpy ride.

Taxis

The taxis are known as a white taxi service and these can pick you up from any location although they’re not allowed to stop in bus stop designated areas. Taxis cost about the same as you would expect to pay in the UK.

Ferries and Boats

There are water taxis you can take from beach to beach, while a ferry links Malta to Gozo and other surrounding islands. The trip to Gozo takes about twenty minutes and is well worth a visit.

You can see a lot of Malta simply by buying a pass and taking advantage of free entry to many visitor attractions and points of interest. Despite being a tiny island there is lots to see and do, and the whole area cannot be explored in just one day.

Tours and Excursions

No matter where you stay in Malta you’ll find a range of tours and excursions to buy.

Tours and Excursions are a great way to see the entire island. You can choose a river tour, a sea tour or a jeep tour which takes you on a mini safari. You’ll find points of interest and historical buildings throughout the entire island, while the wildlife and beaches offer great opportunities to stop and take in the sights.
